New Newborn Support Pillows for your Baby Sling

March 25, 2011

Filed under: Baby Slings — admin @ 12:06 pm

This great accessory for your baby sling is designed to provide extra support for the neck and spine of infants under 9 pounds. Made from amazingly soft organic cotton jersey, this specially designed pillow is made to slip into your baby sling under your infants back and neck to keep your newborn in the perfect position for those first few months in the baby sling. This design easily enables parents to ensure that their newborn is positioned correctly in the baby sling, keeping your infant’s chin off the chest in those first few months.
The best part is that once your baby has gained greater strength in their neck, just keep the pillow and use it as a their first toddler pillow when they grow up and start sleeping in a toddler bed!

January 27, 2011

Filed under: Delivering in Style,Hospital Delivery Gowns — admin @ 9:12 pm

It is one of the most exciting days of your life! You are about to have your baby! Cameras start snapping from the moment you enter the hospital. It is probably the closest you will ever come to feeling like you are being followed by the paparazzi… well except that it’s your husband. Then you are handed the standard hospital gown to wear for the delivery. You look at the gown, and realize how awful it is. You think, “They sure don’t show these on that hospital tour I took”. They are so awful! It is slightly see-through, with gaps that don’t ever quite cover your behind. The strings keep coming untied and the shoulders keep slipping down. And the smell… antiseptic and … you don’t really want to know! All of the pictures of this momentous occasion, you will be wearing this?

Not for this Mom! You want to be comfortable and look stylish while giving birth!

I have designed a line of affordable and beautiful Hospital Delivery Gowns for your moment in the spotlight. This is your moment and we want you to shine! Now when that camera snaps, you will look beautiful and confident with that new little bundle in your arms. All your friends will wonder how you looked so great right after giving birth. So go ahead and post the hospital picture on facebook!
After giving birth to my son, and loathing all of the photos from the hospital, I wanted to design something beautiful that moms would be proud to wear on such a life changing day. I have designed our hospital gowns to make your feel comfortable and also covered!

The design includes snaps all the way down the back to ensure you will have full coverage from behind. I have also included snaps at the breastbone to help you breastfeed discretely and comfortably right after giving birth. Our ribbon sash can be tied in the back or the front to accent that beautiful belly.

Mom’s who have a c-section will love to continue recover in those few extra days in style after delivery!

The latest baby sling giveaway!

November 29, 2010

Filed under: Win a baby sling — admin @ 3:06 pm

Check out the latest great review of our slings from Thrifty Nifty Mom! While you are there, enter to win a sling of your choice!   I love the pictures of her decorating the Christmas tree with her daughter in her sling!  It is so wonderful to let your child be a part of all the fun, instead of sitting on the floor watching!  Hurry over to her blog and enter!

My daughter has hit the stage where she wants mommy or daddy to be within her site any time she is awake. It’s touching really that she loves us so much, but it certainly makes it hard to get anything done around the house! Lots of times being in the same room isn’t even good enough for her, she wants to be held!

This weekend we’ve been setting up our Christmas tree and decorations, as I’m sure many of you have been doing the same. My Mod Mum Sling arrived just in time! I was able to put Maggie in the sling and still decorate without having to worry about her crying. She thought it was great fun as we walked all around the house. I’ve also found that taking a sling along shopping is a great thing for when baby gets tired of being pushed in the stroller or shopping cart. Not only that, but strangers are less apt to approach you to touch baby when they are in a sling–this is definitely a plus in my book!!  I’m sure that Maggie and I will be taking numerous shopping trips this next month and my Mod Mum will be going right along with us! The sling is small enough to easily tuck into my purse or diaper bag which makes it very convenient!

This is my second sling (although I have many other baby carriers”) and this one is by far my favorite sling OR carrier yet! The print is fabulous. It fits my style perfectly! The fabric is so very soft and comfy for both myself and my daughter.  It is so easy to get on. You dont’ need to connect straps or buckle anything. You just fold it in half and lift it over you head–done! Maggie feels safely secured in there as I’m wearing it, which is most important!

The shopping experience you’ll receive at Mod Mum Slings is A+!  If you are like me, you will debate for a half-hour before deciding on which fabric you want (honestly, I want 10 of them!). These are the prettiest fabric choices I’ve ever seen! If you have any questions about your sling (sizing, how to breastfeeding with baby in one, etc) you can call the owner personally and she’ll help you out–honest!! She wants to help you! The slings should work for your child until they are about 35 pounds. With the rate my petite girl is picking up weight, she’ll be able to use the sling for a few more years! I even saw pictures on Mod Mum’s Facebook page of people using the carriers for their small dogs!

What’s better, http://www.modmums.com/ is having a Black Friday Sale right now that ends tonight! You can get 25% off plus FREE SHIPPING! This is a great deal, so dont’ delay! Just type in code, “GIVETHANKS” at the checkout. So go pick out the one you want, then give hubby the hint that you’d like to find one of those under your tree this year!! Or order now so you can use it while you are shopping til you drop this holiday season!

AND, Mod Mums is being generous enough to offer TWO of my fans a chance at winner the sling of their choice! One winner will be chosen during the flash giveaways this coming Friday night, Dec. 3rd starting at 8 PM EST on my Facebook page–make sure you’re there! Baby Sling Giveaway with Dibs!

November 11, 2010

Here is our latest and greatest giveaway with Katie from Dibs! We are giving away one baby sling to her readers.  She is an amazing mom who promotes beautiful “Green” products.  I applaud her for her story on how she was able to start a great business, while being home with her kids.  It is such a pleasure to work with her. Here is a little bio on this amazing mom!

I started Dibs! on a whim!   I had about 10 cloth diapering friends on Facebook, and I would find giveaways and tell my friends about them.  I happened to be friends with a retailer, and she thought I was doing a great job of spreading the word.  She asked me if I would be willing to help her do some more advertising for her store.  Dibs! was born! I created the page, posted a few giveaways, and invited my 10 or so friends and asked them to invite their friends.   I just started posting the giveaways that I was finding, and I now have 2,000+ Facebook fans in just over 2 months.  News travels fast about freebies!  Anytime a business asks for help, I tell them to have a giveaway.  Freebies grab attention – when people win something, they tell their friends.  When businesses are generous and donate an item, it creates loyalty!

For those who aren’t familiar with Dibs!, Dibs! is your one stop place to find all of the natural parenting giveaways going on around Facebook!  I am passionate about cloth diapering, baby wearing, and everything else that’s good for you and your family! I will point you in the direction of AWESOME giveaways on Facebook!  I mostly post about cloth diapering giveaways, but I throw in a few other ones that I think are fun!

I have also branched out into hosting giveaways on my blog.  My giveaways have included gift certificates for online natural parenting stores, cloth diapers, nursing covers, wetbags, natural laundry soap, just to name a few!  I have lots more coming up too!  So stay tuned!

I know how hard it is to take the plunge into cloth diapering.  I have been there.  It seems like a huge upfront investment, but it really isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things!  I wanted to make a place online where you can come and seek out free and cheap ways to build your “stash”  I also do reviews, which I think is SO important, so you can actually see a product in use.   Diapers fit babies differently,  it is nice to be able to see one on, instead of just a photo of the diaper.

I love that I get to showcase, promote, and become friends with the businesses.   I also love hearing that someone won a giveaway that I told them about.  I love that my fans come to my wall with questions and we get to discuss things, or help them find a certain product that they are looking for.  Through Dibs!  I have been able to bless so many people.  I just recently had a cloth diapering giveaway with over a dozen sponsors.  (There is one more giveaway on my blog in this series, it is open until Monday)  In the end I will have sent out 7 diapers, lots of wipes, cloth diaper detergent samples, a wetbag, and lots of other goodies!  Not only does it bless the winners, but it gives the sponsors lots of traffic!  Another thing I was able to do was put together a starter stash for a friend.  I gave her quite a few diapers, and all the little things she needs to get started – wipes, a wetbag, cloth diaper friendly cream, and wipe bits!  I am also working on a similar gift for another friend.  My grandma says that I want to  “cloth diaper the world”.  :)

I have been a cosmetologist for almost 4 years, and I work at a beautiful salon.  My boss is amazing, and lets me work very part time.  The rest of the time I am at home with my beautiful 16 month old daughter.  We want more babies, but are wanting to finish up our home remodeling project before we add any more pitter-pattering little feet!  We have been cloth diapering since she was 3 months old, and we have had a blast with it, and more importantly – have saved lots of money!  My husband loves it too, the other day I overheard him talking to a friend of ours who’s wife really wants to use cloth, but he is scared!  I think my husband convinced him to make the switch!  Speaking of my husband…he is where I got the name “Dibs”.  That’s what he calls me, and it seemed so fitting for what I do!

I would say I am pretty crunchy, and getting crunchier by the minute.  I want to be healthy – I want my family to be healthy.  I want be responsible with our planet.   I don’t know where Dibs! will lead to, but I am hanging on for the ride!  It has been so much fun so far, and I am excited to see what the future holds for my crazy little idea!

Make sure to like her Dibs! facebook page for deals a plenty!  Check out the details for the giveaway on her blog:  Dibs!

Getting rid of hiccups!!!

October 28, 2010

Filed under: Mom tips and tricks — admin @ 9:24 am

My cousin Jill posted this Ancient Chinese secret to getting rid of hiccups!  She is a mom of 7 kids, so I am guessing that she would know.  I thought it was hilarious, but everyone swears by it.  There is nothing more frustrating than when you get the hiccups and can’t get rid of them.  Mine usually occur somewhere weird like on an airplane or in the car!  I guess I should keep a spoon handy?  In the glove-box?

Ancient Chinese Secret

I want to share a very special treat with you. Mark’s brother Stephen learned this trick in China many years ago. It is the never-failed way to get rid of the hiccups. Seriously. I have never had this NOT work, and I’ve seen it work at least 100 times on many different people. Nobody believes it at first, but it honestly works.
The only tools you need are a medium-ish glass of water and a spoon or fork.
You put the spoon or fork into the cup of water.

Next, position the handle of the spoon so that it applies pressure to the very center of your forehead as you tilt the cup up and drink the water. By the time you finish drinking the water, the hiccups are gone.
Yeah, it looks stupid.
The size of the cup and spoon aren’t critical, but they just need to work together so that you can get the pressure on your forehead while you are drinking. Apparently there is an accupressure point triggered that makes the hiccups stop. Or maybe not. But who cares? It works!
Thank you Jill!

Baby Sling Giveaway with Steals, Deals and Life!

October 22, 2010

Filed under: Baby Slings — admin @ 6:53 pm

We were so please to have the opportunity to work with Beth from Steals, Deals and Life!  Check out what she had to say about our baby slings:

I’ve tried slings before but never have seen such a comprehensive website. It’s aesthetically pleasing but also is so good at teaching you how to wear the sling and use it properly. They have some really great how-to instructions and videos that really helped. I had to look at the video a couple of times to get it right, and my newborn was not happy when I first tried putting her in but once I got her comfortably put in it she went right to sleep!

I couldn’t believe it! This little one is most comfortable when she’s sleeping on one of us. It is nice bonding time but makes it difficult to get anything done, especially with a two year old around. The sling makes it possible to have that bonding time while still having both hands free to get my laundry and dishes done and even to (gasp!) eat breakfast. :)     I love it love it love it!

You can read more on her blog and enter to win a baby sling of your own! Contest ends November 3rd. Check out the details…

Can extra nurturing during infancy make your child kinder and smarter?

October 12, 2010

Filed under: Baby Tips — admin @ 4:43 pm

We love this article from Time Magazine!  How many times have you had someone tell you that your baby will become spoiled and needy if you hold them too much?  It looks like the results are in, and it is the opposite effect!  So put that baby in a sling and cuddle all you like.  Get everything you need done, while still giving your baby or toddler all the attention they need and deserve!

Read the entire article here at Time.com

Can extra nurturing during infancy make your child kinder and smarter?

Over the last several decades, more and more research has suggested that experiences in early life — even prenatal life — can have a disproportionate influence on the development of personality and physical and mental health. Now another group of studies, led by Notre Dame psychology professor Darcia Narvaez, confirms earlier work suggesting that children who get more positive touch and affection during infancy turn out to be kinder, more intelligent and to care more about others.

Narvaez, who will present her findings at a conference in early October, conducted three separate studies. The first compared parenting practices in the U.S. and China. Another followed a large sample of children of teen mothers who were involved in a child abuse–prevention project, and compared outcomes of various types of early parenting practices. The third examined how parents of 3-year-olds behaved toward their children.

All three studies suggested the same thing: children who are shown more affection early in life reap big benefits. Researchers found that kids who were held more by their parents, whose cries received quick responses in infancy and who were disciplined without corporal punishment were more empathic — that is, they were better able to understand the minds of others — later in life.

Although there were some differences between American and Chinese practices, “we found mostly parallels,” Narvaez notes.

Given that highly affectionate parenting practices are similar to the practices anthropologists believe parents used during the thousands of years that humans lived in hunter-gatherer societies, it’s likely that they are closely matched with what a developing baby’s brain naturally expects. (More on Time.com: Similac Recall Outrages Parents: Are Beetles Bad?)

Consider the way babies instinctively cry when put to sleep alone. In the early human environment, a child would never have slept more than arm’s reach from his parents or other caregivers. Lone sleeping may elicit a stress response in the baby because it’s not the “safe” environment that the brain is programmed to expect. The fact that most babies can adjust to it anyway shows how flexible and “plastic” brain development is — but Narvaez’ research suggests that meeting the brain’s early expectations may have added benefits.

“What’s been studied most is responsivity,” she says, referring to the way parents respond to their babies and act accordingly, for example, noticing when they are about to cry and reacting appropriately to subtle positive and negative signals about what they want. “[Responsivity] is clearly linked with moral development. It helps foster an agreeable personality, early conscience development and greater prosocial behavior.”

Even rat research confirms the importance of early nurture. Rat pups born to mothers that lick and nuzzle them — even rats that are put in the “foster” care of such mothers — are healthier, grow faster, and are better able to run mazes and interact socially than pups that are neglected. Rats raised by less affectionate moms have deficits in all these areas — but they do perform better in extremely stressful situations. (More on Time.com: Why Most Moms Don’t Follow Breast-Feeding Recommendations)

I summarize much of the latest research in empathy in the book Born for Love: Why Empathy Is Essential — and Endangered, co-authored with leading child psychiatrist Dr. Bruce Perry:

[W]hile we are born for love, we need to receive it in certain, specific ways in early life to benefit most from its mercy. We need to practice love as we grow through different social experiences to best be able to give it back in abundance. The brain becomes what it does most frequently. It is shaped every day by what we do — and what we don’t do.

If we don’t practice empathy, we can’t become more empathetic. If we don’t interact with people, we can’t improve our connections to them. If we don’t ease each other’s stress through caring contact, we will all be increasingly distressed.

Of course, early life is certainly not the only influence on empathy: some of the most caring, altruistic people have suffered horribly neglectful and abusive childhoods. Children are, thankfully, quite resilient. But if you want to give your child an edge in these areas, lots of cuddles and responsive parenting certainly can’t hurt.

Support Mom Owned Businesses!

October 8, 2010

Filed under: Why buy a Mod Mum Baby Sling — admin @ 2:56 pm

Have you made the pledge?  I love love article from the Handmade Toy Alliance.  As a Mom and small business owner, I have become very conscious of the products that I buy for myself and my family.  I love supporting other mothers and small businesses.  From buying food at the local farmers market, eating at a locally owned restaurant, shopping at my local boutique and purchasing handmade T-Shirts for my son, I love knowing who I am supporting.  Take the pledge to be aware of who you are buying from!

Buying local, living within our means, supporting small business and the US economy – these are all things that many of us are doing more and more often these days.  With money being so tight, we are all living with less, and putting more thought into the purchases we do make.

So, this lends the question, what are we doing to improve all of our situations, build up American businesses and put our money where our mouth is (literally)?  What can each of us do to help charge up the economy and support each other?  We certainly have less than we did this time last year, so how can we look ahead to the future and still buy, well, things?

Buy handmade – it’s as simple as that.  We can’t afford to buy as much as we used to, but we can make conscious choices to support specific businesses.  We can go to the local mom and pop toy shop, rather than the big box store.  Sure, we might only get 2 items, rather than 4, but those products will generally be better made, more thoughtful items.  And, a local company will benefit from your choice, rather than a large corporation.  We can choose to frequent farmers markets and craft shows.  These events allow us to meet the maker and hear the story behind the product.  It instills the value of American craftsmanship in our families and our children.  We can choose to look to Etsy and the Handmade Toy Alliance for gift items.  Our product options and the sheer beauty of the items we find will be multiplied ten fold to what we find in large department stores.

If everyone made the pledge to buy just one hand crafted product for someone on their gift list this year, think of the thousands of businesses that will grow and nourish our communities. It may mean reframing how we go about our purchases, taking a little more time to choose what we need, or want, going back to a simpler way of life.  But, it will be so worth it.

Join the business members of the Handmade Toy Alliance and pledge to buy handmade.  It will be the easiest choice you made yet!
