Can extra nurturing during infancy make your child kinder and smarter?

We love this article from Time Magazine!  How many times have you had someone tell you that your baby will become spoiled and needy if you hold them too much?  It looks like the results are in, and it is the opposite effect!  So put that baby in a sling and cuddle all you like.  Get everything you need done, while still giving your baby or toddler all the attention they need and deserve!

Can extra nurturing during infancy make your child kinder and smarter?

Over the last several decades, more and more research has suggested that experiences in early life — even prenatal life — can have a disproportionate influence on the development of personality and physical and mental health. Now another group of studies, led by Notre Dame psychology professor Darcia Narvaez, confirms earlier work suggesting that children who get more positive touch and affection during infancy turn out to be kinder, more intelligent and to care more about others.

Narvaez, who will present her findings at a conference in early October, conducted three separate studies. The first compared parenting practices in the U.S. and China. Another followed a large sample of children of teen mothers who were involved in a child abuse–prevention project, and compared outcomes of various types of early parenting practices. The third examined how parents of 3-year-olds behaved toward their children.

All three studies suggested the same thing: children who are shown more affection early in life reap big benefits. Researchers found that kids who were held more by their parents, whose cries received quick responses in infancy and who were disciplined without corporal punishment were more empathic — that is, they were better able to understand the minds of others — later in life.

Although there were some differences between American and Chinese practices, “we found mostly parallels,” Narvaez notes.

Given that highly affectionate parenting practices are similar to the practices anthropologists believe parents used during the thousands of years that humans lived in hunter-gatherer societies, it’s likely that they are closely matched with what a developing baby’s brain naturally expects. (More on Time.com: Similac Recall Outrages Parents: Are Beetles Bad?)

Consider the way babies instinctively cry when put to sleep alone. In the early human environment, a child would never have slept more than arm’s reach from his parents or other caregivers. Lone sleeping may elicit a stress response in the baby because it’s not the “safe” environment that the brain is programmed to expect. The fact that most babies can adjust to it anyway shows how flexible and “plastic” brain development is — but Narvaez’ research suggests that meeting the brain’s early expectations may have added benefits.

“What’s been studied most is responsivity,” she says, referring to the way parents respond to their babies and act accordingly, for example, noticing when they are about to cry and reacting appropriately to subtle positive and negative signals about what they want. “[Responsivity] is clearly linked with moral development. It helps foster an agreeable personality, early conscience development and greater prosocial behavior.”

Even rat research confirms the importance of early nurture. Rat pups born to mothers that lick and nuzzle them — even rats that are put in the “foster” care of such mothers — are healthier, grow faster, and are better able to run mazes and interact socially than pups that are neglected. Rats raised by less affectionate moms have deficits in all these areas — but they do perform better in extremely stressful situations. (More on Time.com: Why Most Moms Don’t Follow Breast-Feeding Recommendations)

I summarize much of the latest research in empathy in the book Born for Love: Why Empathy Is Essential — and Endangered, co-authored with leading child psychiatrist Dr. Bruce Perry:

[W]hile we are born for love, we need to receive it in certain, specific ways in early life to benefit most from its mercy. We need to practice love as we grow through different social experiences to best be able to give it back in abundance. The brain becomes what it does most frequently. It is shaped every day by what we do — and what we don’t do.

If we don’t practice empathy, we can’t become more empathetic. If we don’t interact with people, we can’t improve our connections to them. If we don’t ease each other’s stress through caring contact, we will all be increasingly distressed.

Of course, early life is certainly not the only influence on empathy: some of the most caring, altruistic people have suffered horribly neglectful and abusive childhoods. Children are, thankfully, quite resilient. But if you want to give your child an edge in these areas, lots of cuddles and responsive parenting certainly can’t hurt.

Support Mom Owned Businesses!

October 8, 2010

Filed under: Why buy a Mod Mum Baby Sling — admin @ 2:56 pm

Have you made the pledge?  I love love article from the Handmade Toy Alliance.  As a Mom and small business owner, I have become very conscious of the products that I buy for myself and my family.  I love supporting other mothers and small businesses.  From buying food at the local farmers market, eating at a locally owned restaurant, shopping at my local boutique and purchasing handmade T-Shirts for my son, I love knowing who I am supporting.  Take the pledge to be aware of who you are buying from!

Buying local, living within our means, supporting small business and the US economy – these are all things that many of us are doing more and more often these days.  With money being so tight, we are all living with less, and putting more thought into the purchases we do make.

So, this lends the question, what are we doing to improve all of our situations, build up American businesses and put our money where our mouth is (literally)?  What can each of us do to help charge up the economy and support each other?  We certainly have less than we did this time last year, so how can we look ahead to the future and still buy, well, things?

Buy handmade – it’s as simple as that.  We can’t afford to buy as much as we used to, but we can make conscious choices to support specific businesses.  We can go to the local mom and pop toy shop, rather than the big box store.  Sure, we might only get 2 items, rather than 4, but those products will generally be better made, more thoughtful items.  And, a local company will benefit from your choice, rather than a large corporation.  We can choose to frequent farmers markets and craft shows.  These events allow us to meet the maker and hear the story behind the product.  It instills the value of American craftsmanship in our families and our children.  We can choose to look to Etsy and the Handmade Toy Alliance for gift items.  Our product options and the sheer beauty of the items we find will be multiplied ten fold to what we find in large department stores.

If everyone made the pledge to buy just one hand crafted product for someone on their gift list this year, think of the thousands of businesses that will grow and nourish our communities. It may mean reframing how we go about our purchases, taking a little more time to choose what we need, or want, going back to a simpler way of life.  But, it will be so worth it.

Join the business members of the Handmade Toy Alliance and pledge to buy handmade.  It will be the easiest choice you made yet!

Giving away a baby sling with The Curious Case of Mommyhood

August 23, 2010

Filed under: Baby Slings — admin @ 11:11 am

If you didn’t win a baby sling with our facebook giveaway, here is your chance!  We are back with another giveaway with the wonderful Bridget from The Curious Case of Mommyhood!  Bridget is an amazing mother, who is always focused on green parenting.  Her blog is a wealth of information, and we are so pleased to partner with her.

Here is what Bridget had to say about our baby slings:

As many of you know, the invention (many many MANY years ago) of the baby carrier/baby sling was a lifesaver for moms, dads and caregivers alike.  Not only are carriers convenient for us and babies because of all we do on a daily basis, but the positive emotional and psychological effects baby slings have for us and our little ones are, to sum it up in one word, profound!

I seriously don’t know what my son and I would have done without a carrier these past few years.  Who wants to push around their infant in a stroller or carry a car seat everywhere they go?  My life was so much easier with our baby carriers.  I was able to continue doing so many of my daily duties with my child safely and cozy next to my chest or on my hip.  All the while my hands free.  Park never cried because he was right there with me.  It just makes sense.  I can’t imagine what I would have done without one.

Here’s another questions for you, what baby would rather be pushed around in a stroller or carried in a car seat instead of laying in a comfortable carrier next to their mother?!!!  I would say probably next to none.

Modmum, one of my absolute favorite sling companies, is giving away a free sling to one lucky winner!  The winner can pick any sling of their choice.  There are a great variety of colors, patterns, and fabrics to choose from. Something for everyone!  They even have a man sling which my husband rocked for sometime.  It is super handy..especially if you have more than one child.

Babywearing article from Pregnancy Magazine

July 22, 2010

Filed under: Baby Slings — admin @ 8:34 pm

Mod Mum would like to thank Pregnancy magazine for their wonderful article on baby wearing!  It is a practical guide to carrying your baby in any baby carrier, and doing so safely.  We love that the rule that all babies should be “visible and kissable” that they mention.  “The visible and kissable rule applies when you put your baby in a sling, carrier, car seat or stroller.  We shouldn’t just put our babies in something and forget about them.”  You can read the rest of the wonderful article on their site.

Win a Mod Mum Baby Sling with Minimal Mom

July 21, 2010

Filed under: Baby Slings — admin @ 1:34 pm

We have another giveaway from our wonderful friend Cambria at The Minimal Mom.  Cambria is a work-at-home, blogging mom of two little girls, Hadley (2) and Hayden (3 months).  We were so pleased when Cambria contacted us to write about our baby slings.  Having used her Mod Mum sling with both kids, we felt like she would be a wonderul person to talk about our baby slings. She loves wearing her babies, and loves her Mod Mum Baby Sling!

Here is a little more about the Minimal Mom!

Crazy, busy momma of a tot and a newborn. A former big city living, fine wine lovin’, using the kitchen in my fourth floor walk up for clothing storage instead of food preparation, marketing professional, turned breastfeeding, food pureeing, baby wearing, suburban living, butt wiping mom navigating her way the best she can through the baby years.

Recently moved to a Minneapolis suburb from San Francisco, by way of Vegas and Orange County. Quite the route, huh?

Lead characters in this crazy mom’s life:

Hadley, born July 8, 2008. A ball of energy, with crazy Popeye strength. While she can play tough, she is all girl. Current interests: Dora the Explorer. Princesses and castles. Her Little Tykes Cozy Coupe. And our baby proofed silverware drawer that she figured out how to open.

Hayden, born March 26, 2010. Currently a blob of digestive processes that smiles.

Being a stay at home working mom myself, I love to support other mothers out there.  Here is a snippet of what Cambria wrote about Mod Mum:

I have lots of stuff that have proven to be incredibly useful throughout motherhood. But the one thing I used the most was our baby sling. Yes, I am a baby carrier to the max. With Hadley, I carried her more than I pushed her in the stroller. I carried her until I was five months pregnant and just couldn’t handle a 27 lb kid on my hip. And now, while I need to use a stroller more often than not because I have two little ones, I carry Hayden in the sling while pushing Hadley. I could write for days on why I like to carry my babies, but here is an article to check out about the benefits of babywearing so we can get on to the fun stuff!

My sling of choice is my Mod Mum baby sling. About a year and a half a go Hadley and I were perusing a baby show in Los Angeles and I left my other sling at home in the wash and we had to use the stroller. No big deal, that’s what we have it for. As we were perusing the aisles I came across Mod Mum Slings booth and fell in love with their fabrics. Just gorgeous! And I had to purchase one, justifying my purchase of another sling is for back-up. I am glad I bought it because I use it like crazy!

Baby Sling Giveaway with Happy Hour Mom

July 16, 2010

We are so pleased to announce another baby sling giveaway from our friends at Happy Hour Mom.  We love any opportunity to support other mom’s who love baby wearing!  The Happy Hour Mom’s are passionate about sharing ideas on their blog to connect with other mothers around the world.  They are wonderful mom’s who have been able to travel the world while raising their families.

Here is what the mom’s had to say about our slings!

From animal mamas to humans the bond between mom and child is unlike anything in the world. Animals around the world transport their young. From kangaroos carrying babies in pouches in the Australian outback to penguin babies perched on their parents’ feet in the frozen Antarctic it is important to keep a close eye on our babies. In our world, moms still need to have hands free to tend to other kids, work, chores etc. The recent trend has made child transportation so much more easy and comfortable. Mod Mum wants all Moms to experience a convenient, stylish and comfortable way to have their baby close, yet still have the ability to get things done (“stylish”because it can be a new staple in your wardrobe). Happy Hour Mom is all about multi-functional baby gear. One of the best things about Mod Mum’s baby slings are that they can be used for babies from birth to 35 lbs.  We had privilege of seeing the quality and luxurious fabrics at the Midwest Baby Fest. Now mamas everywhere can enjoy their “happy hour” hands-free. Take advantage of this awesome giveaway in conjunction with Mod Mum and their designer baby carriers.

Check out their blog for lots of ideas and a chance to win a Mod Mum Baby Sling of your choice!

Baby Sling Shopping Guide

May 11, 2010

Filed under: Baby Sling Safety,Baby Slings — admin @ 1:37 pm

Shopping for babies is a lot of fun. Before you go out and spend a fortune on baby items follow these important tips.

Travel systems may seem like a handy option, but the truth is they usually are not. Travel systems, or a coordinating car seat and stroller, can be relatively overpriced and over-sized. If you want a stroller that your car seat can snap in to you can normally find other stroller frames that are less expensive than a travel system.

Do price comparisons. Baby items can usually be found in multiple store locations, so you do not have to settle. Compare prices online, but also realize that there are usually shipping costs and time restraints with shopping online. A new option for some department stores is to order an item online and then have them ship it to your nearest store for pickup to save on shipping.

Measure your back seat to know what size car-seat you should get. Some car-seats have a hard time fitting in smaller cars. It is also a good idea to test out how easy it is to snap and unsnap the buckle. Some are much easier to use than others, and you don’t want to have to spend a lot of time getting the car-seat buckled and unbuckled when you have a crying baby on your hands.

Go crib shopping in person. Cribs will be made at different heights. If you are short or tall you don’t want to have a hard time getting the baby out. Find a crib you like, and then do price comparisons online.

Are you planning on using the baby item for more than one child? If you are planning on having future children keep that in consideration when purchasing your baby items. Some items, such as blankets and clothes, do not have to be well-thought-out. Other items may need to be more gender friendly, such as car-seats, high chairs, and play pens.

Don’t settle for a generic baby carrier from your local department store. There are a variety of high quality, affordable baby carriers online that will be much more comfortable and easier to use than the generic brands. Research baby carriers online and look at customer reviews to begin your search.

The biggest advice I can give is to talk to other parents and get recommendations from them. Ask your friends what is one item they could not live without. Then, ask them what one item they have that they never use. This can help you with your baby item checklists, and know which ones you need to stress over. Compile a checklist of items you need when the baby arrives, and cross them off as you get them to make sure you have everything ready in time.
